The CU Off-Road Max Coupler Hitch Allows Tow Vehicle And Off-Road Trailer To Move Independently

Every high-quality off-road trailer shares a common feature: a Tri-Axis Articulating Hitch that connects the trailer to the tow vehicle. This hitch serves as both a performance booster and a safety measure, particularly crucial when navigating challenging and uneven terrains.

What Is The Function Of The Tri-Axis Articulating Hitch?

The tri -axis articulating hitch provides a solid towing connection between the vehicle and trailer. At the same time it allows them to move independently of each other. Several companies build different types but they are all essentially a rotating, pivoting mechanism.

What Are The Component Parts Of A Articulating Hitch?

These 2 pictures show the parts that make the hitch work. I explain the workings of it below.

The CU Off-Road Max Coupler Hitch components consist of a "Trailer Side" and a Yoke that bolts to a standard ball hitch receiver. Here is how it works:

  1. Yoke - Allows for side to side movement. Mounts to a standard receiver hitch using a large bolt and nut.

  2. Trailer Side - Mounts to the trailer and allows 360 degrees of rotational movement. If your trailer uses the whole 360 degrees you are in trouble.

  3. Hitch Pin - Connects Yoke and Trailer Side Together. Acts as Pivot point.

  4. Function - Receiver with Yoke is mounted on tow vehicle, Yoke is attached to Trailer Side utilizing a standard pin. Working as a unit it provides 3 Axis of available movement.

What Other Types Of Hitches Are More Commonly Available?

Picture show above a standard ball hitch and a Pintle Hitch.

  1. Ball Hitch - Standard ball hitch has a minimum amount of articulation. As such it should be used only when generally towing in pavement and even surfaces.

  2. Pintle Hitch - Usually found in industrial and military applications where large loads are being towed. They have more articulation than the standard hitch but not as much as the dedicated off-road hitch. Definitely a worthy hitch.

Why Should You Install A Articulating Hitch On Your Off-Road Trailer?

For Overlanders or general off-road use adding a tri axis articulating hitch to your rig and trailer makes it far more capable setup. If your goal is to get to the most beautiful camp spots that is important. It's also important when trails get more challenging than you were expecting. Nobody wants a trailer to decouple or possibly flip on the trail. Here is a flipped trailer.
