Ever had that nervous feeling you get overlanding when the needle on your fuel gauge is perilously close to "E," and the nearest station is far far away? The vast expanse of the wilderness stretches out before you, and each mile brings more uncertainty because you are "Running On Empty." You are regretting not having filled up when you had a chance because that station in the middle of nowhere was price gouging. Then you remember you have a range-extending Jerry can mounted on your off-road rig or trailer with 5 gallons of precious fuel in it. How do I spell relief? D-I-E-S-E-L!

In this video, I'm installing jerry cans on my Xventure off-road trailer to carry extra diesel and water for extended overlanding trips. I'm using heavy-duty jerry can mounts from 4X Innovations, and I'll show you the whole process, from painting and adding rubber protection to the final installation.
How To Install Jerry Cans On Xventure (Or Any) Off-Road Trailer
You don't actually install the Jerrys on the trailer, you install a Jerry Can Mount that holds the can securely to your rig or trailer. What are some guidelines for Installing Jerries on a Xventure trailer and off-road vehicle?
Accessibility - Jerries get heavy when full. If you can reach them from the ground all the better.
Well Made Mounting Bracket - When choosing the mount make sure it will stand up to rigorous off-road conditions.
Secure Install - 5 gallons of water weighs over 40 lbs and you will have the weight of the can and bracket. Whatever location you choose to mount your Jerry can holder has to be able to handle forces that are trying to throw that weight around. Use adequate hardware also.
My Xventure XV-3 the day I picked it up at the Schutt Industries Factory in Clintonville Wisconsin. I ordered a pretty stripped down trailer so I could customize it the way I wanted to.
Fenders On The Xventure Are Perfect Spot To Mount Jerry Cans
So, I was thinking about the fenders on the trailer, and they seem like the perfect spot to mount some Jerry can brackets. They’re super easy to reach, nice and sturdy, and it’ll be a breeze to bolt them through the fender and the sidewall of the trailer. Just makes sense, right?

I Chose These Jerry Can Mounts From 4XInnovations As My Jerry Can Holders
So, I kept spotting these cool mounts on different vehicles and couldn't help but do a little digging online to find out who’s behind them. Turns out, they’re made by 4Xinnovations out of Wisconsin! These mounts are seriously tough—heavy gauge and the welds are top-notch. They’re designed to fit Nato Spec cans or Sceptor cans, depending on the swingarm you choose. Plus, they’ve got some holes cut out for weight savings and others pre-drilled for easy installation of the hinge and snap lock. Pretty neat, right?

Unpainted So You Can Choose A Custom Color
The mounts are unpainted black iron when you get them. Choose your color and paint them the way you like. I used black Rustoleum. I'm the world's worst painter. These will need to be repainted soon. I neglected to use primer prior to painting and I'm sure that would have helped make the finish last.
Once they are painted the hardware can be added and they ready to install.
Adding A Layer Of Rubber To Prevent Metal on Metal Contact
So, here’s the deal: the Xventure is made of aluminum, and the Jerry can mount is all steel. I wanted to avoid any issues with those two different metals touching each other, so I decided to get a little crafty. I slapped on a layer of rubber to the sides of the mount that would be in contact with the trailer. I had this rubber diamond plate mat just chilling in the garage, so I figured, why not use it? I thought this was a solid move for a few reasons:
First off, it helps prevent corrosion between the metals. (electrolysis )
Secondly, it gives a bit of cushioning, which is always a plus.
Isolate them to prevent rubbing steel on aluminum painted trailer side.
And lastly, it’s just a smart way to use what I already had lying around!
Installing the Mounts on The Fender Of Xventure XV-3
For the installation I used hardware consisting of stainless bolts, nuts, fender washers and rubber fender washers. Using the holes provided in the mounts I positioned the mounts on the fenders of the trailers and drilled through the mount and the trailer.
So, I've got these two Jeeps, and they're ecoDiesels, which means they really know how to stretch a gallon compared to those gas guzzlers out there. Plus, I’ve got this handy 5-gallon extra tank on my trailer that gives me an extra 80 to 100 miles of range. Let me tell you, there have been times when I totally spaced on filling up the tank, and that can get pretty sketchy, especially when you're out in the middle of nowhere, like the desert. But that extra 5 gallons? It’s not just about keeping my Jeep running; it seriously gives me peace of mind when I’m out on the trails.
