Driver keep your eyes on the road! It is easy to see how close you have to drive to the edge on U.S Route 550. Here is why its called "The Million Dollar Highway."

The Million Dollar Highway Is A Breathtaking (Slightly Terrifying) Part Of Travel To Ouray Colorado

We cruised in on the legendary Million Dollar Highway. And let me tell you, the views start hitting you like a snowball in the face as soon as you arrive. Picture this: towering San Juan mountains wrapping around our motel, the Twin Peaks Lodge, like a cozy blanket. The jaw-dropping mountain scenery is a major reason why Ouray Colorado travel is like no other. This town fully embraces its high-alpine vibes, and you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a postcard—minus the annoying postage fees!

This Snowshed was built on U.S. HIghway 550 in 1985 to prevent frequent closures due to avalanches. After driving the MIllion Dollar Highway I think I will only travel this road in good weather with no snow or ice.

Jeeps And Offroading: Huge Part Of The Unique Vibe of Ouray Colorado Travel

We visited Ouray to take part in the annual Ouray Jeep Jamboree. Seriously, the town was like a 4x4 paradise! Everywhere you turned, there were Jeeps all lined up, just waiting to take on those gnarly high-alpine passes.

Restaurants, shops, microbreweries, Ouray has it all plus somethings a lot of other tourist towns don't have: a breathtaking highway to get there, and incredible views from every part of town.

Ouray isn't just for Jeeps

We decided to explore the downtown on foot. The whole place has this charming, preserved feel, with old houses, buildings and the kind of dramatic cliffs you’d expect to find in a natural amphitheater. There is no shortage of great places to eat either.

Walking Through a National Historic District

The whole downtown area is a National Historic District, and you can really feel the history around here. You’ll love the 19th-century vibes with awesome old buildings like the Elks Lodge and the stunning Beaumont Hotel, which dates all the way back to 1886. Strolling down Main Street is a treat, too—check out the antique ore cars turned into planters, a neat little shoutout to Ouray's mining history. If you're into history and charm, this town has got you covered!

Mineral Springs: A Big Part Of Ouray's Attraction

Checking out the natural mineral hot springs is definitely a highlight of visiting Ouray! We stayed at Twin Peaks Lodge, and they’ve got a bunch of big and cozy pools where you can chill out after a long day of exploring. Plus, they serve up a tasty breakfast and have a restaurant where we enjoyed a really good meal. If your not staying at a location that has hot springs you Ouray has a beautiful public one you can go to. Ouray Hot Springs Pool
