PowerStop sells a Truck & Tow upgrade with carbon fiber ceramic pads but it includes slotted rotors. I wanted the benefit of the pads but not the drawback of drilled and slotted rotors. I did a little mix and match:

Once abrasive grit gets trapped inside those cavities, the rotor essentially transforms into a grinding wheel. Every time you touch the pedal, that trapped dirt cuts deep grooves into the pad compound, accelerating wear and causing premature grooving on the rotor face. A solid, smooth-faced rotor sheds loose dirt continuously, keeping the contact patch clean and preventing unnecessary trail damage.

The 3.0L EcoDiesel puts roughly 400 lbs of extra cast-iron engine and turbo plumbing directly over the front axle compared to the 3.6L Pentastar. In addition to carrying that front-heavy bias during steep descents, the diesel powertrain generates 442 lb-ft of torque starting down at 1,400 RPM.

You can do a quick pad change out but I choose to take the time to clean sliders and regrease and the expense of new rotors.

Complete Step-by-Step Front Brake Installation Guide

1. Clean the Unit Bearing Hub Flange

Remove the old rotor and thoroughly wire-brush all rust and scale from the unit bearing flange. Any rust left behind the new rotor prevents it from seating flat, causing runout and brake pedal pulsation down the road. Apply a thin film of anti-seize to the mating face.


2. Fluid Retraction and Disassembly

To avoid pushing dirty fluid and ABS-damaging sediment backward into the master cylinder, bleed the old fluid out during retraction. Attach a clear tube and catch bottle to the caliper bleeder screw. Open the bleeder, then use a C-clamp across an old brake pad to press the dual pistons smoothly into the caliper bores. Close the bleeder valve securely before releasing the C-clamp to prevent air ingestion.


3. Bracket and Hardware Reconditioning

Unbolt the caliper slider guide pin bolts and remove the caliper body. On the workbench, strip the old pad clips and wire-brush the caliper cradle bracket where the clips sit. Clean the guide pin bores with brake cleaner, scrub with a nylon bore brush, and blow dry using clean compressed air.


4. Lubrication and Pad Assembly

Apply a light coat of high-temperature ceramic brake grease behind the new stainless anti-rattle clips to prevent galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals. Install the clips, lubricate the pad slider ears lightly, and clip the Z36 pads into the cradle.


5. Solid Geomet Rotor Mounting

Mount the new solid PowerStop Geomet-coated rotor onto the clean hub flange and secure it with the factory retaining screw. The Geomet coating shields the non-friction surfaces from rust and road salts while providing a clean bedding surface for the new pads.


6. Caliper Bracket and Caliper Body Installation

Reinstall the heavy caliper anchor bracket onto the steering knuckle. Apply blue threadlocker to the bracket bolts and torque them to 144 ft-lbs. Slide the loaded caliper body over the rotor and pads, apply grease to the piston and outboard contact points, and torque the caliper guide pin slider bolts to factory specification.

A fresh set of high-temperature pads deserves fresh, moisture-free DOT 4 brake fluid. A pressure bleeder allows you to flush the entire hydraulic system solo without relying on someone pumping the pedal.


  1. Connect the specialized adapter cap to the master cylinder reservoir.


  2. Pressurize the tank to 15 PSI (do not exceed 15 PSI to avoid damaging plastic seals).


  3. Connect a catch bottle to the bleeder screws and flush the system in the proper sequence from furthest to closest:


    • 1st: Passenger Rear (RR)


    • 2nd: Driver Rear (LR)


    • 3rd: Passenger Front (RF)


    • 4th: Driver Front (LF)


  4. Monitor fluid clarity at each corner until fresh, bubble-free fluid flows out, then close the screw and release tank pressure.

I test drove the Jeep and performed the bed in process so my Z36 Pads & Rotors would work together. Subsequent driving found them to be working much better than the OEM.

The PowerStop Z36 Road Bedding Procedure

To build an even transfer layer of carbon-ceramic friction material onto the Geomet-coated surface, complete this sequence on an open, safe stretch of road:

  • Step 1: Perform 5 moderate-to-aggressive decelerations from 40 mph down to 10 mph in rapid succession. Do not lock up the brakes, and do not come to a full stop.

  • Step 2: Immediately perform 5 moderate slows from 35 mph down to 5 mph in rapid succession.

  • Step 3: Drive moderately for 5 minutes with minimal braking to allow the entire assembly to cool down evenly through airflow.

Crucial Tip: Never bring the vehicle to a complete, stationary stop with your foot pinned to the pedal while the rotors are hot during bedding, as this causes uneven pad compound deposits and brake judder.
