Man, the Southern California desert is just unbeatable when the weather cools down. For thousands of us, an Anza Borrego overlanding trip is the ultimate winter tradition. It’s the biggest state park in Cali, so there’s plenty of dirt to get lost on without bumping into a crowd every five minutes. Whether you’re squeezing through tight slot canyons, checking out those massive metal sculptures, or taking in the view from Font’s Point, there’s always something to see. Plus, you’ve got Ocotillo Wells right there if you really want to let it rip. Trust me, you won’t run out of adventure out here.

Planning Your Anza Borrego Overlanding Trip in Winter

An unplanned Anza Borrego overlanding trip can lead to some of the most scenic views in the state, from the rugged mountains along the Pacific Crest Trail to the eroded landscapes of the desert floor. Plan to visit the amazing visitor center while you're there to grab a local map and get expert advice. Just don’t plan a visit in the summer when temperatures skyrocket.

Starting at Walker Pass and the Pacific Crest Trail

Back when I was living in the San Francisco Bay Area, I basically had to bake two extra days into my schedule just to get a head start on my adventures. Getting down to Southern California staples like Joshua Tree or Anza-Borrego usually left me with two choices: the mindless drone of I-5 or the more interesting pull through Bakersfield and over Tehachapi Pass.

I almost always opted for the Bakersfield route. It gave me a chance to cruise along the Kern River and pull into Walker Pass Campground—a spot I’ve hit more times than I can count. It’s a scrappy little high-desert camp that’s pretty much guaranteed to have a spot waiting for you. There aren’t many bells and whistles, but it’s got a cool vibe, mostly because the Pacific Crest Trail runs right through the middle of it. It’s the perfect spot to kick back before hitting the real dirt.

After a ride that seemed to go on for forever I reached Yaqui Pass on the West Side of Anza-Borrego. I perfectly positioned to visit Borrego Springs and the Visitor Center in the morning to get maps and information.

Finding the Best Anza Borrego Maps and Resources

Since this was my first real Anza Borrego overlanding trip, I made a point to swing by the visitor center to grab some maps and get the lay of the land. Usually, you’ll find a solid Ranger or park staffer who knows the backcountry like the back of their hand. But honestly? Sometimes I find that after hours of geeking out on my own research, I end up knowing more about the specific trails than the folks behind the desk! Still, it’s always worth the stop—you never know when they’ll have the latest scoop on washouts or trail closures that haven't hit the forums yet.

Must-See Metal Sculptures at Borrego Springs

Look, you can't just hit the visitor center and call it a day. You’ve gotta take a slow crawl through Borrego Springs to check out those massive metal sculptures. Honestly, it’s the last thing you’d expect to see—one minute you’re airing down and looking for rocks, and the next, there’s a 350-foot-long dragon literally "swimming" through the sand.

There are over 130 of these things scattered across the desert floor, and the scale of them is just mind-blowing. They’re impressive enough for the sheer size alone, but the detail on the rusted metal is next level. It’s like some post-apocalyptic art gallery where the only admission fee is a little dust on your tires. Definitely worth the detour before you disappear into the canyons!

They call it "California's Grand Canyon." Try and time your visit to be there at sunrise or sunset for the best experience.

Key Takeaways for Your Visit

  • Stop at the Visitor Center: Even if you have GPS, the local maps and ranger advice at the Anza Borrego Desert State Park headquarters are invaluable for current trail conditions.

  • Respect the Fire Rules: Remember, campfires must be in a metal container. Don't be the person who leaves a scar on the desert floor—bring a portable fire pit.

  • Water is Life: As I saw at Fonts Point, the desert is unforgiving. Always carry more water than you think you need, for yourself and for fellow travelers you might meet.

  • The "Metal Giants" are a Must: You’ve seen the photos, but seeing the Galleta Meadows sculptures in person is a completely different experience. Give yourself a few hours just to scout these out.

  • Embrace the Pivot: If you can’t find a campsite or a trail is closed, don't sweat it. Some of the best stories come from the "planned" moments that didn't go quite right.

Final Thoughts: The Beauty of the Unplanned Adventure

My Anza Borrego overlanding trip didn’t start with a spreadsheet or a rigid itinerary—it started with a need to get outdoors and see where the trail led. While I didn't see everything on this trip, the spontaneity of moving from the high pines of Walker Pass to the deep desert washes of Borrego Springs reminded me why we build these rigs in the first place.

Anza Borrego is a place of scale. Whether you are standing at the edge of the world at Fonts Point or looking up at a massive metal mammoth in the middle of the desert, it humbles you. It’s a reminder that even when the sun goes down and you’re setting up camp in the dark, or even if you end up sleeping at a rest area on the way home, the experience is always worth the effort.
