If you are looking for premier sand camping and coastal off-roading in the United States, the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area is tough to beat. We brought our Jeep Gladiator EcoDiesel and Xventure XV-3 off-road trailer up the Pacific Northwest coast for a multi-day sand adventure, tackling steep dunes, tight obstacles, and beach driving.
Blocked By Tree While Finding A Campsite At Oregon Dunes Horsfall Campground
The Gladiator and Xventure XV-3 off-road trailer at this trip was a pretty new setup for us. We were having a blast wheeling around looking for a campsite and exploring. We cruised up this steep hill, took a sharp turn, and boom—there’s this tree just hanging over the trail. The Jeep made it under without a hitch, but our Roof Top Tent? Not so much. Luckily, I got to break in my brand new American-made shovel!
Pro Tip: I air my tires down to 18 PSI on sand. If I get stuck I can take them down to 12 PSI. Without Beadlocks its important not to take turns hard or the tire can come off the rim.
The Fix: My Trusty Shovel
Using our heavy-duty shovel, we dug out the sand track beneath the limb, dropping the trailer's track just enough to ease the RTT under without contact. We finally cleared the tree and made it to our campsite at Horsefall Campground.
First Experience at Oregon Dunes - Learning the Ropes of Sand Camping
So, here's the scoop on campsites: they're nestled right in the sand, and you can easily reserve and pay for them online at Recreation.gov. We decided to snag a spot near the day-use parking lot at Horsefall Campground, which was super convenient. Just a heads up, though—some campsites are pretty remote and involve a bit of a drive through the dunes. But if you're all about escaping the hustle and bustle, this is definitely the spot for you!
Setting Up Camp at Horsfall Sand Camping
We camped at Horsfall Space #125, right next to the day-use area. Sure, there are some more secluded spots deeper in the dunes, but being closer to the main hub made it super convenient and felt a bit safer too. Campsites extend in a 150 foot radius around the campsite sign.
Just a Casual Take on Towing My Xventure
So, I like to think of towing my Xventure as just adding an axle to the Jeep. That diesel Jeep gets pretty hefty, and once you throw on bumpers, a winch, and a roof rack, you're flirting with that GVWR limit. But hey, the promise of delicious meals at camp and a cozy place to crash is my secret weapon to convince my wife to join in on these adventures!
Kimchi Is A Bit Of Work To Make But Worth The Effort
My Wifes Kimchi Recipe Step-by-Step:
Chop Napa Cabbage to bite size
Using Korean Course Sea Salt and water soak the leaves at least 24 hours In a large bowl.
Rinse salt from leaves and drain excess water and place in a large bowl.
Add Korean Red Pepper, fresh garlic, ginger root, chopped green onions, a little salt, a little brown sugar, (amounts vary to taste)
Mix well cabbage and ingredients well.
Place in Kimchi container and let sit at room temperature for at least 24 hours.
Optional Ingredients: (if your Kimchi comes out to spicy add these)
Replace with Napa Cabbage with Korean Radish or Cucumbers.
Add anchovies to the Kimchi (that is Korean style Kimchi.
Serve with meat, fish, rice, on hotdogs or hamburgers, basically anything. Just grab a piece Kimchi with chopsticks and wrap around rice or whatever you happen to be eating.
Enjoying the Evening with a Snow Peak Portable Fire Pit at Oregon Dunes
After dinner I got out our Snow Peak Portable Fire Pit and my wife got a fire going. Great way to end the evening. Oregon Dunes allows fires as long as you aren't directly on the sand. A fire pan or fire pit is mandatory. My Snow Peak Pack & Carry is a excellent piece of gear. It folds flat, packs away easily and with the fire up and off the ground gives you a great place to warm your feet underneath. Japan has a tradition of fire pits. This is a quality item that carries on that tradition.
Snow Peak make a variety of sizes and configurations of fire pits. Some are just fire pits, others have cooking grates. All are easy to set up and break down.

Next Day: Exploring Oregon Dunes Horsefall Camp To Hauser Beach
My trailer was so new I was worried about someone hooking up to it and trailering it away. We decided to pack up and move it over to the day use lot. The campground host and his wife assured us they would keep a eye on it for us. Before we took off in the Jeep to explore the dunes, I went ahead and topped off the tank with some extra diesel I had. Gotta make sure we’re all set for the adventure ahead!
The Trek to Hauser Beach
We headed out exploring but along the way there are some massive dunes. We had to try and climb one but we stalled out before reaching the top. Heres a couple tips for dune driving.
You have to have a sand flag attached to your vehicle. It helps others know your rig is on the other side of the Dune.
If you have lockers you can generally use them climbing but don't use front lockers when driving down a steep slope.
Keep your window closed when climbing dunes. I stalled and the front wheel spinning threw tons of sand into the my rig. It was amazing, sand was everywhere included in my pockets.

Wheeling on Hauser Beach
The final stretch opened onto the wide, hard-packed sands of the Pacific shoreline. Driving alongside the ocean with local OHV traffic makes Oregon Dunes one of the most unique overland destinations on the West Coast.
Getting Bogged! We Almost Slid Off The Trail Down Into A Massive Tree Island
Large Tree Islands have steep and soft sandy sides. The trail took us close to one. At the last minute we cut hard left and avoided the disaster of falling in. We were bogged! The shovel, traction boards and locking axles got us out and we continued on to Hauser Beach.
Essential Gear Checklist for Oregon Dunes
Recovery Shovel: Your primary tool for clearing undercarriages, digging tire tracks, and clearing obstacles.
Traction Boards: Carry at least four boards if you are wheeling solo without immediate winch anchor points.
Sand Anchor & Winch: In wide-open dunes without trees, a dedicated deadman sand anchor is mandatory for winch-assisted self-recovery.
Tire Deflator & Pressure Gauge: Airing down to 12–15 PSI is critical for expanding your tire contact patch on loose coastal sand.
