Sodium Ion Battery: The Swiss Army Knife Of A Overlanders Electrical Setup
This sodium ion battery can power up your 12-volt overlanding fridge and kickstart my EcoDiesel Jeep without missing a beat. Talk about a reliable companion!
I'm swapping out that hefty AGM lead acid battery on my Xventure XV-3 for this lightweight OHMMU H5 Sodium Ion Battery. It’s got the potential to be the cream of the crop for all those AGM and Lithium setups folks are using in their off-road rigs, trailers, and campers. It’s like trading in a stubborn mule for a speedy horse—what’s not to love?

Winning A Free Battery Sparked My Curiosity
I won this battery in a raffle at Overland Expo West in Flagstaff Arizona. When I got my hands on it I was amazed at the weight of it or should I say lack of weight. After a lifetime of manhandling car and truck batteries it was shocking.
I actually got for free. Yes, I said free—but I am absolutely not sponsored by OHMMU. I actually won this battery in a raffle at Overland Expo West. The very next day, I went straight to their booth to get the 'rest of the story' on this technology.
Motivated To Take On A DIY Electrical Upgrade Project
Right now, the electrical system that came with the trailer works great for basic LED lights and charging camera gear on the trail. But after five years, it is due for an upgrade. I’ll be moving away from my trusty cooler to a 12-volt fridge very soon, so having a rock-solid battery and charging system is at the top of my radar.

AGM Batteries Are 3 Times The Weight Of Sodium With Half The Performance
Lifting a AGM battery can give you a hernia. Weight Creep is a constant battle on Jeeps and overlanding rigs. Adding a AGM dual battery system under the hood or a bank of batteries to a trailer or any camping setup can be a source of concern. Sodium-Ion beats AGM hands down in weight and performance. You can't drain your AGM down without damaging it, sodium doesn't mind going to "0"

Why Sodium-Ion Batteries Are the Way to Go
When it comes to building Sodium-Ion batteries, we've got ingredients galore! No foreign country can hold us over a barrel, begging for those rare-earth minerals anymore. Unlike those lithium batteries that lean on heavily mined and pricey materials, sodium batteries are made from good ol' everyday stuff like salt and aluminum. So, even though the OHMMU might be whipped up in China, it's still the most patriotic battery you can lay your hands on. It’s like having your cake and eating it too—getting the performance we need without the worries of relying on those hard-to-find resources!

Running A Fridge Or Starting A Ecodiesel Jeep: The OHMMU H5 Can Handle Both Tasks
When it comes to Overlanding, the OHMMU H5 really takes the cake. This here battery is a true dual-purpose champ. It’s got the kind of deep storage that lets you run it down to the last drop without putting a dent in those cells. That’s just what I need for my 12-volt fridge—keeps the cold ones nice and frosty! And let me tell you, it’s not just a pretty face. This battery’s got some serious Cold Cranking Amps under the hood. I could yank it right out of the trailer and use it to fire up my EcoDiesel Jeep without breaking a sweat. It’s like having a trusty sidekick that’s always ready to go!

It mimics the voltage profile of a lead-acid battery, your existing alternator or charge controller will treat it like a standard 12V battery.

Ultimate Compatibility With 12 Volt Charging Systems
No need to lose sleep over connecting new tech to your trusty rig! The OHMMU plays nice with all standard 12-volt systems, so you can rest easy. It's got a nifty built-in Battery Management System that lets it slide right into your current setup like a hot knife through butter. It mimics the voltage profile of a lead-acid battery, your existing alternator or charge controller will treat it like a standard 12V battery.

Lithium Batteries Compete In Weight To Sodium But Fall Short In Performance
Lithium batteries can have a slight weight advantage over Sodium-Ion but that is where is ends. When it comes to versatility Lithium generally can't be used for Deep Cycle and have the Cold Cranking Amps to turn over a Diesel Motor on a cold winter day. Sodium Batteries are a "Dual Threat" like a running back that can catch a ball out of the backfield, capable of storage and starting.
Avoiding The Lithium Fire Hazard: Thermal Runaway
You've seen the videos of electric cars loaded with Lithium Ion Batteries burning for hours and days. Sodium-Ion is much more stable. Although it's possible for a Sodium Battery to overheat it is far less likely due to the much more stable makeup of the elements. This battery chemistry is as stable as a rock—it won’t go up in flames and turn your rig into a bonfire, and it won’t throw a fit in the blazing desert heat either. So go ahead, give it a whirl without a worry in the world!

A Huge Upgrade to my Xventure XV-3 Electrical
Well, folks, this sodium battery is just the tip of the iceberg! I’m breaking this whole build into two parts, like splitting a pie to share with friends. In my next video and blog post I’ll be packing up all this gear and heading out to the Xventure trailer. There, I’ll be rolling up my sleeves to permanently install a shiny new solar charge controller, a dedicated battery charger, and a smart shunt that’ll keep an eye on every single amp coming and going—like a hawk watching over its nest. Stay tuned, because we’re just getting started!
