Setting up my awesome new Reserve wheels and GravelKings should have been a simple afternoon project, but one wrong assumption turned routine shop work into an absolute disaster.
I had gotten lazy and grabbed my high-pressure CO₂ tank meant for airing up off-road truck tires, just to save myself a workout on the Joe Blow floor pump. Instead, in a split second, my ears were ringing, and the entire shop, including the ceiling, was coated in Orange Seal tubeless sealant. To top it off, I managed to scare my wife half to death and thoroughly traumatize the dog.

My 8 Year Old Lynskey Pro GR Got A Huge Performance Upgrade
Often the byproduct of a DIY fail is having to buy new parts. That can really sting if your replacing new parts that you screwed up. In my case I was replacing and upgrading my old set of wheels and tires. That definitely was not in the original plan (or budget). Here is the list:

Installing Panaracer GravelKings: Tubeless Setup
Have you ever installed Continental bike tires, either road or mountain? Usually, it is a knock-down, drag-out fight just to get that last section of bead over the rim. Fortunately, I’ve had great luck with Panaracer tires on both my mountain bikes and my Lynskey Pro GR. That goes for trail performance as well as an easy, tool-free installation where I can seat the bead using only my hands.
Here is the easiest way to get it done:
Wear work gloves: Gloves are mandatory—they save your palms from blistering and give you the leverage and grip you need.
Seat the first bead completely: Push one bead all the way into the rim bed around the entire circumference to give the tire structure so it stops flopping around.
Start opposite the valve: Begin working the second bead onto the rim, saving the valve stem area for the very last push.
Drop the beads into the center channel: Pinch the beads together into the deepest recess in the center of the rim bed. Dropping the tire into this trough provides the extra slack needed to slip that stubborn final section over the rim wall.
Roll the final section over: Using the heels of your hands, work both sides toward each other and roll that final stretch of bead up and over the lip.
Use a lever only as a last resort: If it simply will not budge, carefully use a plastic tire lever—just take care not to gouge the rim or tear the tubeless rim tape, which will ruin your airtight seal.

Setting The Tubeless Tire Bead On The Reserve Tubeless Ready Rim
This used to be a real problem for me. Years ago my little portable compressor would not generate enough of a burst to seat that rim so I would have to go to a local gas station and use their inflator. That worked about half the time. Seating Beads Requires A Violent Burst Of Pressure
Jump ahead a few years and I started overlanding in Jeeps and needed to be able to air up tires after airing down for traction. One of the method I have is the CO2 tank. This is where I made my tubeless CO2 tire mistake. I also learned to remove the Presta Core that limited the volume of the burst. That works 100% of the time. Here are some great options:

Adding Tubeless Sealant Through Fillmore Valves
Reserve Fillmore valves come standard on Reserve wheels, and because their design is completely different from a standard Presta stem, I had to change how I inject tubeless sealant.
With a traditional Presta valve, you simply remove the valve core and inject sealant directly into the stem. But Reserve
Fillmore valves do not have a removable valve core—they use an internal high-flow poppet rod instead. That meant my go-to Park Tool TSI-1 Tubeless Sealant Injector (affiliate link) wouldn't work, because its rigid plastic tube is designed to slip inside an open, coreless Presta stem.
To solve the problem, I repurposed a hydraulic disc brake bleed syringe (affiliate link).
Standard brake bleed kits use flexible clear tubing sized to clamp tightly over bleed ports. That same tubing slips snugly right over the entire outer body of the Fillmore valve. Once the valve cap is off, pushing the hose over the stem gives you a sealed connection, allowing you to push the Orange Seal straight through the high-flow channel without making a mess.

The Risk of Rapid Pressure Spikes
Here in the desert, goatheads are a constant menace, puncturing tires left and right. More often than not, when you go to jump on the bike, the tires need a top-off. In fact, if you look closely at my tires, you can see wet spots all over where Orange Seal has been working overtime trying to plug tiny thorn punctures.

Too Lazy to Work a Floor Pump
To save time, I fell into the bad habit of reaching for my off-road CO₂ tank rather than working my Joe Blow floor pump. That shortcut was a bad idea for a few distinct reasons:
No dedicated gauge: My off-road tank doesn't have an inline low-pressure gauge, meaning I was essentially airing up blind.
Rapid pressure loss: CO₂ molecules permeate through tire casing and butyl much faster than ambient air, meaning tires go flat again far quicker.
Wasted trail resources: Draining the tank in the workshop means running out of gas when I actually need it to air up after a day of wheeling in the Jeep.
The Result: Tire Blown Off Rim and Sealant Everywhere
I still don't know what I was thinking, but muscle memory kicked in and I reached straight for the CO₂ rig. Looking back at the video footage, I gave the valve way too many rapid bursts of high-pressure gas.
The ironic part? The tire held the pressure initially. It didn't actually let go until the exact moment I pressed my manual tire gauge against the valve stem to check the reading. That tiny jolt broke the camel's back, the bead blew off the rim wall with a deafening bang, spraying a shockwave of sticky orange latex across the shop, the walls, and the ceiling. It was definitely a wake-up call!

Safe Inflation Rules for Tubeless Gravel Rims
I managed to recover my wits (and my hearing), get cleaned up, reseat the tire, add more sealant and fill the tire to 50 psi. This time I used my Joe Blow Floor Pump.
Always dry-seat the beads first before adding any liquid sealant.
Use a manual floor pump or a dedicated bicycle tubeless booster canister rather than a high-volume industrial CO2 cylinder.
Never exceed the maximum pressure rating stamped on the rim or tire sidewall during initial seating.
Inspect both sides of the rim to verify that the bead indicator line sits uniformly above the rim lip before reaching riding pressure.

I will still use my CO2 for seating tubeless beads on rims but with more care. I will also be adding regulator guages to my tank that will let me know how much CO2 is left in the tank and more importantly limit the pressure.
